7 Lifesaving Smoke Detector Safety Tips


More than 4,000 Americans lose their lives each year in fires. What is even more tragic is that two-thirds of these deaths could be avoided. The difference between life and death comes down to one simple thing: the smoke detector. If it is missing or malfunctioning when you need it, your family could be in serious danger.

As an electrician from a long line of electricians, I feel it is my responsibility to educate consumers about how they can protect themselves with some simple smoke detector tips I have picked up over the years.

#1 Do you have Smoke Detectors everywhere you should have them?

You ought to have smoke detectors in:

a. Every staircase
b. Your kitchen
c. The basement
d. Every bedroom
e. Every hallway

Also make sure you have a smoke alarm installed on every floor of your home.

#2 Do you Replace your Batteries each year?

Most smoke detectors run on carbon-zinc or 9-volt alkaline Batteries. If you are hearing a beeping or chirping coming from your alarm, probably your batteries are running down. If your batteries run out, you lose your most basic level of fire protection.

Up to 20% of smoke alarms in US residences have dead batteries. This always floors me. Test your smoke detector every month. It is simple. Just locate the test button on the cover of the alarm, push it in, and listen for a beep.

#3 Have you installed your smoke alarm in the right Spot?

First, your smoke alarm should be installed on a wall or the ceiling only.

Second, you should take a walk through your home and check out every single smoke detector, one by one:

a. Has it been installed a minimum of 4 inches away from the nearest wall? Smoke alarms are more likely to fail when they are in tight areas, like wall joints or corners.

b. Is it installed about 12 inches from the ceiling? Again, avoid corners.

c. Did you install it a minimum of 20 feet from heat-producing home appliances, such as ovens, stoves, and fireplaces? These appliances will damage your electronics. Without properly working electronics, your smoke alarm's ability to warn you of a deadly fire is compromised.

d. Never install next to a window, door, vent, or anything that lets a draft through. Drafts reduce the effectiveness of smoke detectors.

#4 Make sure your home has Dual-Sensor Smoke Detectors

There are actually two different house fire types: flaming fires and smoldering fires. A lot of alarms will only be able to detect the presence of one type. Get yourself dual-sensing alarms and cover all your bases.

#5 Replace your smoke detector every 10 years

The NFPA (National Fire Prevention Agency) has recommended that smoke detectors be replaced once every 10 years. This makes sense. All electronic devices fail eventually--think about your iPod or your Xbox. You would not use those for more than 10 years, would you?

#6 Maintain your Smoke Alarm

I often find them in homes that are dirty, missing too many parts, or warped from heat, These are the types of alarms that really fail when it counts--broken enough to not do the job, but not so broken that everyone would notice it.

Clean out your detector regularly too. Wipe out the flies, dust, and other debris. And remember; never EVER paint a smoke detector for any reason. Paint covers your smoke alarm's sensors and prevents it from working.

I see a lot of smoke alarms that are missing covers too. Replace them. Covers can protect the sensitive electronics in your smoke alarm. When they get exposed to the environment in your home, these parts can break down much more easily.

#7 Hard-Wire and Interconnect your Smoke Alarms

Home fires will normally start in one specific area of the residence and spread quickly out of control. If you get your smoke alarms hard-wired and interconnected, one smoke alarm detecting a fire with prompt all of them to sound the alarm. The extra time generated from this could give your family the extra time to rescue your family when a fire spreads quickly. The NFPA has recommended interconnecting and hard-wiring your smoke detectors. This can be tough work, so consider hiring a licensed electrician to do it for you.

Have you considered generating your own energy with solar panels? Well, a major consideration is how much they will cost. If the panels are too expensive, then they may not pay off for you in the long run.

So, how much do solar panels cost? Well, the prices vary obviously depending on what you are getting. A good way to compare various solar panels is the watts of Power that the panel will put out. This really tells you what you are getting for your money.

When dealing with solar panels, there are two common materials you will come across that the panels are made of. Some panels are made of amorphous silicon. Other panels are made of crystalline silicon or micro-crystalline silicon.

Crystalline silicon tends to produce a more efficient solar panel. In other words, more of the sun´s energy will be converted to electricity.

Amorphous silicon panels are less efficient, but cheaper to produce. So, there is a balance to be reached between cost and efficiency.

However, for our purposes, we will just look at the actual Power output to compare prices between various panels.

For example, Sunsei produces a crystalline silica solar panel called the SE-4000 that is priced at about 0. This panels has a maximum Power output of 65 watts. This ends up being about per watt.

Another company Kyocera produces a crystalline silicon panel called the KS20 that costs about 0 retail. The panel has a maximum power output of 20 watts. This ends up being about per watt.

Kyocera produces another crystalline silicon panel called the KD135GX-LP. This panel costs about 0 and is a maximum of 135 watts. This ends up costing about per watt.

The other option of course is using an amorphous silicon panel. Since amorphous panels are less efficient, they cover a larger area to produce the same number of watts.

Silicon Solar produces an amorphous silicon solar panel for about 0. The panel has a maximum power output of 40 watts. So, the cost per watt is about .

Sanyo also produces a mixed amorphous and crystalline panel called the HIP-195BA3 that costs about 00. So, you are looking at about per watt.

So, how much do solar panels cost? Both amorphous and crystalline silicon solar panels cost about per watt and some panels can go as high as or per watt.

Note, the wattage rating is based on a maximum. The actual output that you will receive will depend on the intensity of the sun where you live.

While you might know that you need a wall surge protector for your electronic appliance, not many people know that once you have it installed that is not the last of your worries. A surge protector will deteriorate over time as it steadily absorbs Power surges. Once it reaches its absorption limit it will no longer function as a protection device and will become a simple Power strip. You should therefore check your device at least once a year to make sure it still operates like it should.

How do you tell if it is no longer working? Well most surge protectors nowadays come equipped with an LED indicator Light that lets you know that you are protected. This Light is usually red. Some devices will have two LED Lights: one red, one green. The green LED Light indicates that the outlet the protector is plugged into is properly grounded. While having a properly grounded outlet is important it will not matter if the red indicator light is out. That means your device is no longer working and your electronics are at risk of failing as well. Of course if the outlet is not grounded then your unit will not protect you anyway, which leads to my next point.

In spite of indicators Lights letting you know you are protected, you are never 100% safe. Lightning blasts for example will outright fry any surge protection unit you have installed and may even damage or destroy the very equipment it was trying to protect. Then you have units whose indicator light means nothing more than that it is plugged in and turned on. This by the way is not a surge protector but simply a Power cord. People often think that power cords are enough protection for them when the fact is these devices provide zero protection against surges.

Another misconception people have is about whole house surge protectors. These do not protect individual items but rather attempt to stop surges at the home's perimeter via the power meter or main circuit board. They will still not stop a lightning blast. For individual electronics you will need to install a separate protector for each appliance.

If you want to know exactly what to look for when shopping for a protection unit then make sure you find something with at least 4,000 Joules. Joules measures the amount of voltage a suppressor can contain before it is rendered inoperable. Anything less than 4,000 Joules will find you replacing them more often.

A typical Solar pv electrical system is described to refresh our basic electrical knowledge. This knowledge will allow us to be comfortable with the design of our pv solar system and have confidence that it is not over or under designed.

The pv Solar Energy System: A pv Solar system has the four major components.

1) THE SOLAR PANEL: This is the component that receives photons from the sun and converts the photon energy into electricity. The panels are rated in Watts.

2) ChargE CONTROLLER: This component insures that the storage Batteries are not overCharged and damaged.

3) STORAGE BatterieS: The Batteries store our collected electricity until we use the energy to Power our appliance. Our electricity is store as the potential energy rated in Volts.

4) Inverter: This component changes the current from our Batteries, which is stored in direct current (DC), to an alternating current (AC) which is compatible with our household appliance.

Conversion of SunLight to Electricity: Photovoltaic energy is the conversion of sunLight into electricity through a photovoltaic (pv) cell, commonly called a solar cell. A photovoltaic cell is a non mechanical device usually made from silicon alloys.

Sunlight is composed of photons or particles of solar energy. These photons contain various amounts of energy corresponding to the different wavelengths of the solar spectrum. When photons strike a photovoltaic cell, they may be reflected, pass right through, or be absorbed. Only the absorbed photons provide energy to generate electricity. When enough sunlight (energy) is absorbed by the material (a semiconductor), electrons are dislodged from the material's atoms. Special treatment of the material surface during manufacturing makes the front surface of the cell more receptive to free electrons, so the electrons naturally migrate to the surface.

The output of a solar panel is usually stated in watts, and the wattage is determined by multiplying the rated voltage by the rated amperage. The formula for wattage is Volts times Amps equal Watts. So for our example, a 12 volt - 60 watt solar panel measuring about 20 X 44 inches has a rated voltage of 17.1 and 3.5 amps .

17.1 volts times 3.5 amps equals 60 watts.

Our solar panel rated as 60 watts exposed to 6 hours of peak sun will produce 360 watt hours of Power per day. An typical; home will require 4000 watts of DC generating power to produce sufficient kwh to cover annual electrical consumption. This equates to 67 - 20 X 44 inches solar panels from the example above.

Wiring the System:

Solar panels can be wired in series or parallel to increase voltage or amperage respectively, and they can be wired both in series and in parallel to increase both volts and amps. Series wiring refers connecting a positive terminal of one panel to the negative terminal of an adjacent panel. This connection will produce voltage as the sum of the two panels and the amperage will remain the same as the output panel. Two 12 volt and 3.5 amp panels wired in series will produce 24 volts at 3.5 amps.

Solar panels can be wired in parallel by connecting positive terminals to positive terminals and negative terminals to negative terminals. Two 12 volts and 3.5 amps panels wired in parallel will produce 12 volts and 7 amps.

A series/parallel wired system refers to doing both to the above. This wiring scheme would produce 24 volts and 7 amps from our two 12 volt and 3.5 amps panels.

Inverter:

An Inverter is a device which changes DC power stored in a Battery bank to standard 110 / 240 volts AC. Nearly all our lighting, appliances and motors are designed to use AC power. Inverters come in sine wave and modified sine wave output. Most 11o volts devices can use the modified sine wave output. However, special devices that use lasers or silicon controlled rectifiers will require the pure sine inverter which is more expensive.

Auto transfer switching is a common internal feature which enables switching from one AC source to another and / or from utility power to inverter power for designated loads. Battery temperature compensation, internal relays to control loads, automatic remote generator starting and stopping and many other programmable features are available.

Charge Controller:

A charge controller monitors the battery's state of charge to insure that when the batteries need current when required and also insure that the batteries are not overcharged. Connecting a solar panel to the batteries without a charge controller seriously risks damaging the batteries and potentially causing a safety concern.

Charge controllers are rated based on the amount of amperage they can produce from a solar array. If a controller is rated at 20 amps you can connect up to 20 amps of solar panel current output. Advanced charge controllers utilize Pulse-Width-Modulation which insures the most efficient battery charging and extends the life of the batteries. Even more advanced controllers can include Maximum Power Point Tracking which maximizes the amount of current going to the batteries by lowering the panel's output voltage.

Many advanced charge controllers offer Low Voltage Disconnect and Battery Temperature Compensation as optional features. The Low Voltage Disconnect allows the terminals to be voltage sensitive. If the battery voltage drops too far the panels are disconnected thus preventing damage to the batteries. The Battery Temperature Compensation adjusts the charge rate based on the temperature of the battery since batteries are sensitive to temperature variations above and below about 75 F degrees.

Batteries:

The batteries for our system should be Deep Cycle units which are designed to be discharged and then re=charged hundreds or thousands of times. Batteries are rated in Amp Hours (ah) and are usually rated at 20 or 100 hours. Amps hours refer to the amount of current which can be supplied by the battery over the periods of hours. An example would ne a 350 ah battery could Supply 17.5 continuous amps over a 20 hour period.

Like solar panels, batteries are wired in series and/or parallel to increase voltage to the desired level and increase amp hours.The capacity of the battery amp hour capacity requires careful sizing for the conditions under consideration. Longest periods of no sun or cloudy conditions, availability of generator or grid backup or a standby generator with battery Charger are among the conditions for consideration. The size of the battery bank will depend on the storage capacity required, the maximum discharge rate, the maxium charge rate, and the minimum temperature at which the batteries will be used.

Overall Design:

As with all electrical systems there are voltage losses as the electricity is carried across the wires, batteries and inverters and these losses are dependent on the efficiency of each component. These efficiency losses vary from component to component, and from system and can be as high as 25 percent. A trained technician will be required to fine tune the system for efficiency.

There were 45 of us, brave souls all. Under an optimistic blue sky, we stood with our bicycles on the shores of the Bosporus on the Asian side of Istanbul, posing for the camera, helmets strapped on. The date, August 4th, 2007. In 15 minutes, we would embark on what some regarded as an impossible, even a foolish, expedition -- a 10,700 km journey that followed the legendary Silk Road. A three and one- half month trek across Asia, ending in front of Beijing's Forbidden City.

Difficult? Certainly. Foolish? Perhaps. Impossible? Not a chance.

Indeed, it was not the first such epic bicycle journey that I had undertaken. In January 15, 2003, I and 32 other adventurous spirits embarked on the inaugural run of the Tour d'Afrique -- from Cairo, Egypt to Cape Town, South Africa in 120 punishing days.

That very first day, in the shadow of the Pyramids, the question I posed to myself was: 'can this really be done'? Can we cycle every meter -- later acronymed and defined as EFI or (Every F...ing Inch)? After all, when we had announced the trip in the media eight months earlier, I was variously accused of being a charlatan, an insane adventurer who was risking peoples' lives, and a naïve simpleton that obviously "had not spent a day in Africa."

The group reached the outskirts of Cape Town one hour ahead of schedule.

Two years later, I stood in front of the Eiffel Tower, posing with another group. We were about to embark on a 4,000 km, eight-country tour from Paris to Istanbul, which we ironically called The Orient Express Bicycle Tour. Ironic because it offered anything but the deluxe amenities found on the famous continental train ride. The question I asked myself on that occasion was: can I make an honest living by running transcontinental tours on a bicycle? The evidence seemed to suggest that I could.

Now, on this fine morning in Istanbul, posing for another camera, I wondered what question I might ponder while crossing the Asian continent. There were many options. The route is rich in architecture, majestic mountains and endless deserts, all suitable for contemplation. It is deep in history, having witnessed the rapacious violence of Genghis Khan's and Tamerlane's armies, the Great Game, the precursor of the Cold War, the grand designs of the former Soviet Empire -- all rich material to analyze man's relentless quest for Power and violence. Or I could confront more difficult subjects, including personal issues and how to put meaning in my life.

In the end, it was the humble bicycle on which I sat that seemed worth thinking about. Having conquered two continents, I knew that long-distance cycling most closely approximates the ancient hunter-gatherer state of mind. The cyclist, like the hunter-gatherer, must constantly worry about his security, his food, a place to sleep, and how to enjoy the satisfaction that comes with just making it through an arduous day (knowing that the next one will be no less challenging).

The bicycle: cheap, nonpolluting, small and silent. Wikepedia among others calls it the most efficient machine ever built by humans, because a person on a bicycle expends less energy than any other creature or machine covering the same distance. Appropriately, I was aimed in the direction of China, a country in which a billion people (give or take a few hundred million) still used the bicycle as their principal means of transportation. And its full potential was still untapped. Somewhere, I'd read that entrepreneurial students were designing a small milling device that could be attached to a bicycle: grind your own grain, on the go. Or maybe it was a water filter. Certainly I'd seen generator-equipped bicycles in museums on which a visitor pedaling at 50 (or less) watts could turn on incandescent Lamp. The only fuel required for all of this: a peanut butter sandwich.

Armed with these stories and memories, my question was readily framed: can the bicycle save the world? That it needs saving seems unarguable. We all know that we're headed downhill on a route destructive to nature and thus to life as we know it.

As it turned out, I didn't have enough time to immerse myself in the depths of such earnest contemplation. I was too busy living, enjoying myself, engaging with drunken Georgians (the former Soviet kind) selling roadside watermelon at 10AM, savouring the beauty of a provincial Chinese city, or choosing a meal by pointing at a number on a menu and hoping -- praying-- that it would not derive from a former member of an exotic species of which I had never heard.

Of course, it wasn't an uninterrupted panorama of pleasure. In Turkey, we biked through one of the worst heat waves in its modern history, with temperatures over 45C degrees for several consecutive days. Hot asphalt stuck to my tires. It did not get any better when, in Tbilisi, Georgia, three km from the hotel in which we were due to take a much deserved rest, a mad taxi driver hit one of my cycling companions. She flew like a missile, landing in front of me. The driver, shameless, promptly backed up his car and drove away before I had time to dismount. No doubt he descended from Genghis Khan. The rider, fortunately, was not seriously hurt.

At the border with Azerbaijan, we were met not only by a delegation from the Ministry of Tourism, but by an eight-piece orchestra, traditional dancers and the entire Azerbaijani junior cycling team. Azerbaijan, of course, is a Muslim country, but in every restaurant we received three glasses, for water, wine and vodka respectively. And this was for breakfast.

Turkmenistan spoke to my heart. I'd grown up under the shadow of a totalitarian regime (Communist Czechoslovakia), so riding in the desert with a continuous police escort felt like the good old days. It did not take me long to readopt the behavior necessary to live and thrive in such societies, to stretch the limits of what is forbidden and at the same time avoid trouble.

At one point, a police officer ordered me into his car. I smiled and politely declined his request, and offered to buy him and his colleagues cokes and ice cream. That sealed our newfound friendship.

Across the Turkmeni desert into the next Stan -- Uzbekistan. No deserts, no mountains and, luckily, no stifling heat. A day's ride from the border we reached the legendary city of Bukhara (the name means monastery in Sanskrit), a glorious sight. We toured the earthen Ark Fortress, home to the rulers of Bukhara for more than a millennium; the Registan, a verdant Square at its foot; and the Kalon Minaret, the tower of death, so-called because of the many victims hurled from its heights. A traditional proverb says that the Samarkand is the beauty of the Earth, but Bukhara is the beauty of the spirit. But some of that spirit was also pure evil. On the eve of 20th century, the Emir of Bukhara enjoyed poking out the eyes of his dissident subjects.

We arrived in Tajikistan to find a country still trying to recover from a recent civil war. Some 60 % of Tajiks live in abject poverty and the minimum wage is a month. Nowhere is the spirit of Stalin more visible than the zigzag borders of Tajikistan, drawn by the young Georgian commissar in 1924 on the well known principle of divide and rule. The country is 65% Tajik, an Ethno-linguistic group different than the Turkic people that surround them. And there are more Tajiks living in exile the surrounding countries than in Tajikistan. Still, it's a stunning place, where the altitude rarely dips below 3,000 meters.

In Kyrgyzstan, after day of rest in Osh, we embarked on a serious climb to Taldyk pass -- to 3,700 meters. Let me tell you, at that oxygen-deprived elevation, you're not thinking about saving the world. You're thinking about saving yourself, if you're able to think at all. But the ride downhill, through the mountain pass into China, was exhilarating.

The former 'kingdom of bicycles,' of course, is no more. Now, China is the El Dorado to every car manufacturer in the world. Here, at last, there was time for sober contemplation. You may ask: how can you think with 1.3 billion people around you? But in fact, the vast majority of Chinese live in the east. Large portions of the West are almost, like Canada's north, virtually uninhabited.

Still modern China and the frenetic pace of change hits you everywhere. New highway construction crisscrosses the Taklamakan desert -- a Uiger word meaning 'enter but do not come out.' Huge apartment buildings sprout like mushrooms after a good rain. Small Chinese cities are home to millions. China is on the Move. And so are the Chinese. Their entrepreneurial energy, suppressed in the decades following the Communist revolution in 1948, has now been released, and is flowing faster than a newly opened dam.

So can bicycle save the world? Of course it can. Imagine every city with boulevards filled with bicycles, pedestrians, streetcars and parks where children could be children again. Is that so hard to imagine? After all, in Copenhagen 36% of all trips are by bikes (only 27% by car). By 2015, only five years from now, they aim to be at 50%. It's in our urban centres that the transformation must occur; half of the world's population now lives in cities. That's more than three billion plus breathing-- or should it be wheezing? -- souls.

What if we persuaded Bill Gates or Warren Buffett or George Soros to put up Million for the best new human-Powered vehicle? Think of the human health benefits, the reduction of demand for our fast depleting fossil fuels. Just as the X Prize created space tourism, so this prize would engender all sorts of new human-powered inventions.

But we need to act. And as I biked mile after mile in today's China, I remembered something I'd learned to my regret as a relief worker in Africa. We human beings tend not to respond until disaster hits.
